We are thrilled to welcome Johnny M. from Pennsbury Racquet & Athletic Club (PRAC) as the newest recipient of a Mullaney Tennis Foundation (MTF) scholarship.
Johnny was recommended for the scholarship by his tennis instructor, who was inspired by Johnny’s passion for the sport and his dream of one day playing professionally.
A Passion for Tennis from the Start
Johnny picked up a tennis racquet when he was just 4 years old, and he knew almost immediately that he had found the sport for him. “Something triggered my heart and I knew it was the sport for me,” he said.
What Johnny loves most about tennis is the work ethic it requires. He enjoys challenging himself, putting himself out there, and being active rather than “just sitting behind a screen.” That mindset extends beyond the tennis court, where Johnny approaches challenges with thoughtfulness and determination.
When it comes to making decisions in life, Johnny says he “looks to God.” On the court, he relies on careful observation and strategy. He studies his opponents for clues, including their body posture, to determine whether they may be getting tired. Then, he remains patient and waits for them to make an error.
A Passion for Learning and Helping Others
Johnny also enjoys helping others and bringing people together. His curiosity extends into the classroom, particularly when it comes to social studies. He credits his former seventh-grade teacher with making the subject interesting and sparking a lasting love for it.
His continued passion for tennis, meanwhile, is fueled by his instructors at PRAC, Mark and Bradley. Johnny appreciates the way they teach both tactics and strategy while emphasizing the importance of footwork.
“Footwork is important because it helps you get to the ball,” Johnny explains.
Inspired by the Greats
Like many aspiring players, Johnny draws inspiration from some of the best to ever play the game. His favorite professional players are Roger Federer and Carlos Alcaraz, two players he admires for their talent and approach to the sport.
And after a long week of putting his backhand to work, Johnny has a very Philadelphia way of treating himself: a chocolate TastyKake cupcake!
Looking Toward the Future
Everyone at MTF is incredibly happy to provide Johnny with this opportunity, and we look forward to watching him continue to grow both on and off the court. His passion, work ethic, faith, and desire to help others make him a wonderful addition to the MTF scholarship community.
