Three years ago, Daria (“Dasha”) arrived in the U.S. from Ukraine with her parents and younger sister. When the war broke out, her father drove the family across Europe, eventually making it to America.
At just 13 years old, Dasha spoke very little English. With the help of others, her parents enrolled her in tennis to give her something to do—something she had never played before. She began training in a group with the Bucks County Tennis Association, and learned to love the sport. Her coach, Steve Johnson, says that she has really come along and has become very good in just three short years. This year she played #1 singles for her high school tennis team—quite an accomplishment!
Recently, her family was able to move into a place of their own after staying with an uncle. Her coach praises her commitment, noting that she is both a highly attentive and very serious student. Since Dasha’s father does not speak English, Steve communicates with him through an interpreter. Currently, Jim Klein, Director of Tennis at the Doylestown Tennis Club, has allowed Steve, with the Bucks County Tennis Association, to teach the Saturday evening training sessions at Doylestown. We are excited to support “Dasha” as she achieves success on and off the court. Quite an amazing young woman!
